The Cleveland Bay is England's oldest established horse breed, originating in the Cleveland district of north Yorkshire in the 17th century. The Cleveland Bay is the oldest established horse breed in England, fixed in the Cleveland district of north Yorkshire by the 17th century, and it is one of the rarest in the world: the Rare Breeds Survival Trust lists it as Priority, with fewer than a few hundred breeding mares left globally. It is always bay, with black points and no white permitted beyond a small star; a leg with a sock or a body splash is, by the standard, not a true Cleveland Bay. Strong-boned, clean-legged, and powerful without feather, it was the prized British coach horse before the motor car ended that trade and very nearly ended the breed with it.

Today a Cleveland Bay is kept largely as an act of conservation. The breed survives through dedicated keepers, the Cleveland Bay Horse Society studbook, and a small ceremonial presence: the Royal Mews has long maintained a team. Owners ride and drive them, and the breed crosses well to make sport horses, but the keeping of a purebred is bound up with breed continuity in a way that's closer to the Shire than to a sport-horse register.
